So yesterday I was drawing a picture of Rika, right from a reference, then I realized something I have never really thought about before. I can't copy that sort of style, it just looks WRONG in anything but my OWN style. Have you ever felt that way? And I think I figured out why that is. (Of course, I am probably wrong, mind you) I looked at my art and I noticed I didn't start drawing until I got super addicted to FullMetal Alchemist back in the 6th grade. Back then, I started to copy the style of the anime and produced a mediocre verison of it.
Example: [link] (Wow, that is OLLLDDDD)
Slowly, as I started to grow more into the artist I am today I noticed little changes in art that I picked up from other animes, games and artists. The style still reflected how I used to draw when I was younger but something else was changing, the development into my own style.

Still looked kind of bad, but I was getting somewhere. Yet it still resembled, slightly, how I used to draw when I was younger. I wanted to work on anatomy, so I started to pay more attention to that then ever before. I admit, I'm still not very good at it today, but I am much better then I was before. Here is a piece from 2007 to show some of my improvements.
Example: [link]
Somehow in 2008-2009 I made my biggest improvements in colour and anatomy, and I am now feeling more like an actual artist. I work really hard at what I like to do, and I strive to get better. I don't know what happened, it might have been age finally catching up to me, but I was finally able to produce something worthwhile and worth looking at.

I don't want to sound like I have a big head, but now that I look back at my old art, I feel proud that I have grown as much as I have. I mean hell, I need practice, and I'm NOT perfect by any meaning of the word. But I have gotten to a level where I am appreciating my style, and I am working to make it better for my sake and not for anyone else's. I will contiune to draw and improve in my own time.
In short guys, I can't do the traditional anime style. I can not produce the super big eyes, the flat-shinny colouring style, the AWESOME digital colouring style, none of that. And because of that I will probably never get half as many favourites as those who can. But you know what I think? I say, WHO CARES!
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Some thoughts?

Your style owns, actually. It's story-ish, I don't know how to explain it...kind of like from a fairy book. I like the style and the way the colors work. It's better to have your style than copying it from someone else. :3

Oh another note, I can't believe how much you've improved! I've been watching you and looking at your art for awhile now, and I've seen that you've been improving but when you put it all together like this in a time line its easier to see exactly how far you've come as an artist. Very impressive, keep up the great work!

Wow! Thank you so much, that means a lot to me. I mean, some people just took a glance and were like, "I see improvement" but I guess they didn't notice how much it was unless they watched me for a really long time. XD And I have to tell you, I became friends with you pretty much at the beginning of my Deviant career. So you have been there for me forever really! XD
